ORIGINAL REVIEW: 26 October 2004 |
It's split into a public bar and a lounge bar. The public bar had the pool table and a rather young set of noisy customers - not the place for first time visitors. So it was lucky we ended up in the other side which was actually quite pleasant with a mix of customers of all ages enjoying a relaxed pint or two. The place wasn't what I was expecting, with the kind of decor you'd expect in a rural pub and a dimly lit atmosphere - you could almost forget you're in Southcote. Very tempting to use those baskets hanging from the ceiling as litter bins - not that we did but I bet there's an interesting collection in there. G.
It really did haev a country pub feel with various country items, including the wicker picnic basket, hanging from the ceiling and pictures of countryside themes such a 'the hunt' on the walls. It was tad smokey in the side we were in but I was sat right next to an air-freshener so it was Norwegian forest cigarette smoke I was tasting!
There was a group of 4 playing crib on the table near us and the bar we were in was quite relaxing a pretty reasonable in it's country pub stylee! S.

BEER EXPERIENCE |
Well, we thought we'd better try the IPA Smooth just so we could say we'd tried it. Strange idea really - making a very standard, common place drink "smooth" but not providing the original version. As it turned out, I'd much prefer the standard version - the smooth didn't taste like it should and was even blander than the usual Greene King IPA. Nothing to recommend it but we probably didn't expect much from it either. G.
I don't understand serving the smooth version. I hope they have not swapped the normal IPA this as that wouldn't make any sense. If it is to introduce people to the real beer from lagers then it's acceptable but it's just not right. Can't remember what else they had in the way of real beer but I don't think it was anything special. S.

"This pub has now closed - most likely soon to be burnt out by one of the kids constantly hanging around the off-license next door."
