Well, it didn't look too bad from the outside did it? The pub has it's own car park and an excellent picture of a pheasant above the door. The signs promised a "walm welcome" was to be had. After stepping through the front door all that optimism drained away in seconds. The bar to the left appeared to be blocked off by a chair in the doorway - perhaps a private party or perhaps not - but there was no warm welcome to be found. In the other side of the pub we waited a good while for the guy behind the bar to come down off his stool (covered in black tape to hold it together) to serve us. The only thing he muttered during the whole time was the price of the drinks, and he broke off half way through pouring one of the pints to have a chat on the phone. To be honest I'm suprised he heard the phone ring with the jukebox cranking out bad music at a crazy volume (I guess so those in the other bar could hear it since the only speakers in the pub were in this lovely 80s style device). The "wine" (if you could call it that) was measured in what seemed like the pubs only remaining wine glass and was then chucked into a half pinter. It's like someone turned their house into a pub a few decades or so back with a gas heater in the front room and even the TV on a coffee table (good spot Stevie). It might have been nice back then but they've just let the place slip away. The Pheasant is falling to pieces - in a state of non-decoration with holes in the ceiling, everything stained a smoky yellow and fixtures and fittings hanging off the walls. Strong contender for the worst pub in Reading award. G.
It's a month since we visited this place and I'm still waiting for Stevie's review - I think he's scared of offending someone. G.
You have basically said everything we needed to know though and said it all very well. Basically, we drank and then we left. The people in the pub seemed ok though and it wasn't like a few where we have had odd looks and the what are you doing in here staring going on. One thing I can say is that this is probably the best example of a pub in need of refurbishing we have seen on this tour. So check it out before itís too late. S.

BEER EXPERIENCE

Hmmm... Forsters, Stella, Tetleys, Guinness and Strongbow. That's your lot! It couldn't get any duller. The only wine to be had for the good lady was out of a big screw top bottle of some sweet fizzy nasty looking stuff. Rather her than me! The Stella was Stella, which may have been the pubs best point. G.
Yes, I don't think Mazza enjoyed her little tipple but at least Stella was on the go. S.

VISITOR FEEDBACK [Give Your Feedback]

"Bad. Just bad. No seats on the right hand side, the place is dirty and smelly. Looks like it's under new management, and they don't look like they're going to last long. Barmaid begrudgingly put her sandwich down to serve me, but neglected to actually swallow before telling me how much my pint was. Not going back."

"I like this little pub, it has a friendly nature and you are made welcome. I do understand however that it has recently changed hands no doubt for the better."

"The worst pub in reading, on the bar side there was no seats apart from at the bar but then ud have to sit with the regulars, the lounge side had seats but a stink of body odour and urine and the locas on that side didnt give us a walm welcome either. we was very quick to exit the pub after 1 drink"

"Much like the the much missed Eastgate, (of Cholmeley Road) that was demolished a couple of years ago, it seems that the brewery has decided to let this pub run itself into the ground. I would have thought with it's location it could have been a good location to provide a student pub, (much like the Upin Arms). Ah well, I guess Reading could do with with yet another place to build/convert into some 1/2 bedroom apartments..."
