The Turks retains quite a bit of it's look and feel from it's Firkin days - starting off with the crazy blue paint splashed all over the front of the pub. Inside, the pub goes back a long way with a pool table at the back. I remember sitting at the bar on some nice wooden bar stools but have to admit I was a bit worse for wear at this stage of the evening! They do food by the look of it and reasonably priced beer. It was a nice pub all round but I'm struggling to think of something to set it out from the crowd. I need to reschedule a slightly more sober visit. Perhaps S-Man's memory is better than mine? G.|
Not really matey. I was just thinking myself that I may have been a little unsober (I made that word up you'll notice) at this point of the evening. My view on the place would be that it still is the Firkin it used to be and I have unimpressed thoughts from this visit. I came away thinking it was just a bit rough around the edges and really needed a good seeing to!
Lots of slightly unpolished wood that had seen better days left me feeling this is a real student place in the old style and it just seemed years behind the other pubs around. If the pints consumed have clouded my vision I apologise but I’m not planning going back. Nice Christmas decorations on the outside though. S.
They had a whole row of hand pumps but only one beer available on them! It looked like there was usually a second, but even that is still a disappointment considering the length of the bar. G.|
It sure is. S.

"pub has recently changed hands (July 2008). The new owner has major plans for an improved service which he hopes to introduce over the next 12 months.
I love the Jazz they have on the Sunday night, good prep for the working week."

"Rudest landlord you could ever meet, five of us came on a Quiet Sunday evening and we had spend around £70 between 9pm and 10:15, the landlord clearly wanted to close early but rather than just say so began yawning loudly, looking at an invisible watch, shaking keys, switching lights on and off etc."

"I think the pub has a bad rep atm - it is a local pub with few faces but a nice atmosphere for a quiet drink or 2 on week nights there is a nice atmosphere on wed and sats i believe with pool table and things, it is worth a go to! the prices arent tht bad either considering the credit crunch!!"

"This pub needed a new review, well out of date, i agree the pub has had many landlords, and over the years i too have thought it to be very poor, it's never really had a definitive scene going on,it has now though, even if its on it's third landlord already in the last 18 months, this place bloody well rocks now, only coming second best to the atmosphere of another local rock pub... the Rising sun. The turks now has live music 3 nights a week and includes a d.j in between bands, excellent stuff!"

"What's happened to this pub? Used to be ok, but it's gone seriously downhill.
No real ale on at all, poor choice of average lagers. Aggressive, rude drunk landlord kicked us out at 1 minute past 11.
I'd suggest walking a bit futher to the excellent Hopleaf. Avoid this dump."

"Pretty girls who cant serve a pint, what!? The turks is a fantastic local pub, the girls are charming and its a shame about the new ownership the old one was great - but times change."

"Might be worth an revisit soon. New ownership. Hopefully that will mean a bit of an cull amongs the 'look-at-me-I-think-I'm-pretty'-bar girls that can't pour a pint to save their lives."
